Our initiative, “Honoring Their Memories,” is designed to create a compassionate space where families and friends can share stories, celebrate the lives of those they’ve lost, and spread awareness about suicide prevention.
We invite you to share: ✍ ✍ ✍
- Their name and age: A simple way to introduce your loved one and ensure they are remembered personally.
- A special memory or story: Tell us about a moment, a time, or something they did that always makes you smile when you think of them. This helps others see the beauty and joy your loved one brought to the world.
What made them unique: Share a few words about what made them special—their talents, personality, or the little things that made them who they were.
- A message of hope or encouragement: We invite you to share a message of support for others who may be grieving or struggling with suicidal thoughts, to spread hope in your loved one’s name.
- A photo (optional): You can include a photo of your loved one that best represents them. This will help personalize the tribute and show the face behind the story. It can be a happy memory or a moment that holds special meaning to you.

By sharing their story, we hope to help reduce the stigma surrounding suicide, create awareness, and bring comfort to those who are mourning. Together, we can create a community where we offer support to each other, and work to prevent future tragedies. Your words and memories may help save a life.
Past Events
Adolescence and Depression Awareness
We conducted a presentation on ‘Adolescence and Depression’ at the 2023 Junior Youth camp held by the Dangme-Tongu Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. We had an audience of over 800 young individuals and covered essential subjects, including the causes and symptoms of depression in adolescents, which helped break down stigmas surrounding this topic. Moreover, we addressed the potential complications that can arise when depression is left unattended, with a specific focus on the alarming issue of suicide. Additionally, we encouraged adolescents to seek help when facing such difficulties.

Excursions and Explorations
We embarked on an excursion led by Yamfo Chapter Executives to tourist sites in Cape Coast, Central Region of Ghana. This gave us the opportunity to visit Kakum National Park, Elmina Castle, and Breeze Beach. This activity brought together 48 participants who had the chance to spread the suicide awareness message to hundreds of people we encountered at the various tourist sites. Tourists were educated on suicide, how to identify a suicidal person, and when and how to seek help. These activities are aimed at helping us reach every corner of the world with our awareness message and spreading hope.

Adolescent Mental Health Debate
Engaging adolescents on mental health has been one of our ongoing initiatives. As part of this effort, we partnered with Letters to Strangers to organize our maiden program, known as the ‘Adolescent Mental Health Debate.’ This initiative gave students the opportunity to debate a mental health topic, followed by a stakeholders’ consultation. Awards were given to representatives from each class, including the debate winners and the second runners-up. Fortunately, the Member of Parliament and Parliamentary candidate for the Madina Constituency Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu graced the event and contributed Montessori books, which were added to the awards. We are excited to continue this initiative to help our adolescents reach their full potential.

Workshop for the Ghana Journalists Association in Accra
We joined the Ghana Association for Suicide Prevention to hold a workshop for the Ghana Journalists Association in Accra, Ghana. The theme of the workshop was ‘Is Suicide Newsworthy?’ It highlighted the impact that publishing news about suicide can have on suicide loss survivors, general population.
Additionally, reporting guidelines have been drafted based on WHO guidelines to assist in the proper reporting of suicide cases. These activities align with our goal of making the world a better place for everyone.

Memorialable Walk in Honor of Maya
A memorial walk was held in honor of Maya. This event was not only a moment of reflection but also a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health awareness. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported Maya’s family on this special day. Your strength and solidarity helped make this tribute truly memorable. Thank you for standing with them, sharing your strength, and helping honor Maya. Together, we can spread hope and ensure no one has to face their challenges alone.

What should I do if I am having suicidal thoughts or in a crisis?
If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts or facing a crisis, it’s crucial to seek help immediately. You can reach out to a mental health professional, counselor, or a trusted individual in your life. In Ghana, the Mental Health Authority’s 24/7 Crisis Helpline is available at 0800 111 222 for confidential, immediate support. If you are outside of Ghana, please contact your local suicide prevention hotline or go to the nearest hospital or psychiatric facility. Remember, you are not alone, and help is always available.
How can I support a friend or family member who is struggling with their mental health?
If you know someone who is struggling, offer them a safe and non-judgmental space to express their feelings. Encourage them to seek professional help from a therapist or counselor. Be patient and let them know that they don’t have to face their struggles alone. Your support can make a huge difference, and when necessary, help guide them to mental health professionals who can provide the right care.
